BMW Nomenclature
There are all sorts of different types of BMW cars, but the names of these cars can be especially confusing. That's because there is a BMW nomenclature that is used to help with identifying cars based on different features of these cars. These are based on numbers and letters.
The numbers used in BMW nomenclature are used to help with identifying the types of BMW cars. There is a three digit number that is used in the name of a BMW car. The first of the numbers is the series number. This number is either 1, 3, 5, 6 or 7 based on the product. The other two numbers are based on the engine displacement. This number is done by cubic centimeters divided by one hundred. For instance, a 328 is a 3-Series car with a 2.8L engine displacement.
The letters used are to identify important features in these cars. The i is the most common of these letters used. It refers to a fuel-injected engine. Therefore, a 540i car is a 5-Series car with a 4.0L engine displacement and a fuel-injected engine.
There are a couple of other features in these cars to watch for as well. A d means that the car features a diesel engine. An x refers to the engine being with an all wheel drive feature. A t means that the car is a hatchback model. A g means that the car uses biogas, which is an alternative type of fuel. These types of cars are not as common on the market at this moment though.
Capital letters are used to identify special types of cars. A C is used to identify a coupe. A T is used to identify a touring wagon.
Other cars outside of the 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7-Series of cars have their own specific things as well. One of the types of BMW cars is the Motorsport car. These cars are named simply by the series of car, including the M3, M5 and M6. For two-seat roadsters the Z is used. These cars include the Z1, Z3 and Z4.
The last of the parts of nomenclature refers to the station wagons that BMW sells. The Touring or Sport Wagon taglines can be used in additional to the letters and numbers in the car make. The name will be different according to the country that the car is sold in.
BMW nomenclature is used to help with identifying the cars that are made by BMW. These names are used to help with showing off the features of these cars and for identifying the types of cars that they are. These names are especially useful for those who are interested in buying BMW cars.
